Which two writers jointly won the 1917 Nobel Prize in Literature?

The story behind the answer

Karl Gjellerup and Henrik Pontoppidan jointly won the 1917 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Both laureates were Danish writers, although Gjellerup was born in Denmark and spent much of his later life in Germany. Gjellerup was honored for his varied and rich poetry inspired by lofty ideals, while Pontoppidan was recognized for his authentic descriptions of present-day Danish life.

The joint award was made during the First World War, when the Nobel literature prize was not given in several other years. The Academy could divide a prize between two writers when it judged that both contributions deserved recognition.

This result is often confused with the 1974 joint award to Swedish authors Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson. Those were different laureates, from a different country and period, and won more than five decades later.
