Which two writers created the original Mr. Bean television character?

The story behind the answer

Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis created the original Mr. Bean television character.

Atkinson developed the character from comic ideas built around a man who could generate elaborate problems from simple situations. Richard Curtis, one of Britain’s best-known comedy writers, helped shape the television format and scripts. Their collaboration combined Atkinson’s physical performance with tightly constructed comic scenarios.

The character was deliberately light on dialogue, making the humour easier to understand across language boundaries. That design became a major reason the series travelled successfully outside the United Kingdom.

Robin Driscoll was also an important writer on the programme and contributed to many episodes, but he is not usually listed as one of the two principal creators. The character’s creation is therefore best distinguished from the broader writing team that produced the series.
