Which two colors form the bicolor design of Ukraine’s national flag?

The story behind the answer

Blue and yellow form the bicolor design of Ukraine’s national flag.

The flag has two equal horizontal bands, blue above yellow. The colors are commonly associated with Ukraine’s sky over golden wheat fields, although their historical meanings and interpretations have varied over time.

The blue-and-yellow combination has deep roots in Ukrainian heraldry and regional traditions. It was used by Ukrainian national movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the flag was officially restored when Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on 24 August 1991. The modern state flag was formally adopted on 28 January 1992.

A frequent mix-up concerns the order of the bands. Ukraine’s flag is blue on top and yellow below; reversing them produces a different arrangement and is not the official design. The flag is also distinct from Sweden’s, which uses a yellow Nordic cross on blue.
