Which national flag has a frigatebird flying above a rising sun?
Answer
Kiribati
Answer
Kiribati
Kiribati’s national flag has a frigatebird flying above a rising sun.
The upper half of the flag is red and shows a golden frigatebird above a rising golden sun. The lower half consists of alternating wavy blue and white stripes, representing the Pacific Ocean and the island groups of Kiribati.
The frigatebird is associated with power, freedom, and command of the sea. The 17 rays of the sun represent the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba, which were the main islands of the former Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony.
Kiribati adopted its current flag after becoming independent from the United Kingdom on 12 July 1979. Its design is based on a coat of arms created in 1937, making the flag a compact visual summary of the country’s oceanic setting and island history.
