Which two colors form Haiti's horizontal bicolor flag?
Answer
Blue and red
Answer
Blue and red
Haiti’s horizontal bicolor flag is formed by blue and red bands.
The modern national flag places blue above red, with a white panel carrying Haiti’s coat of arms in the center. The civil flag omits that central coat of arms, leaving the two-color design plainly visible.
The colors have roots in the Haitian Revolution. Haitian lore says Jean-Jacques Dessalines removed the white band from the French tricolor in 1803, while Catherine Flon sewed the remaining blue and red sections together. The anniversary, May 18, is celebrated as Haitian Flag Day and Universities Day.
A common mix-up is Haiti’s temporary black-and-red imperial flag, adopted under Dessalines in 1805 and later used by the Duvalier governments from 1964 to 1986. The blue-and-red design was restored for the modern republic.
