The Bible verse shown on the Dominican Republic’s flag is John 8:32.
The verse appears in an open Bible at the center of the national coat of arms, which is placed inside the white cross on the flag. John 8:32 reads, in the King James Version, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The wording connects the emblem with liberty and the country’s Christian historical tradition.
Descriptions sometimes say the Bible is open to John 8:31–32 because an open page spread may represent both verses. However, the Dominican Constitution specifically identifies Saint John, chapter 8, verse 32, making John 8:32 the standard quiz answer.
The Bible is topped by a small golden cross and surrounded by national flags and spears. Above it appears the motto “Dios, Patria, Libertad”—“God, Fatherland, Liberty”—while laurel and palm branches frame the shield. The flag’s design originated with Juan Pablo Duarte and the independence movement of 1844.
