Which color is the background field of Greenland's flag?

The story behind the answer

The background field of Greenland’s flag is white. The flag, adopted on 21 June 1985, is divided into equal horizontal bands: white above and red below, with a red-and-white disk shifted toward the hoist.

Known in Greenlandic as Erfalasorput, meaning “our flag,” it was designed by Greenlandic politician Thue Christiansen. Its unusual circular emblem distinguishes it from the Danish Dannebrog, whose red field and white cross reflects Greenland’s constitutional connection to the Kingdom of Denmark.

A common mistake is to answer red because red is highly prominent in the lower band and in the upper portion of the disk. However, the flag’s field is not a single solid color: white forms the upper half, while red forms the lower half. The disk reverses those colors, creating the “counterchanged” design.
