The No. 8 TS050 Hybrid was shared by Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso. Nakajima took the chequered flag, while the sister No. 7 Toyota finished second, producing a long-awaited one-two result for the Japanese manufacturer.

Toyota had entered Le Mans for decades and came painfully close in 2016, when its leading TS050 stopped on the final lap. The 2018 victory came on Toyota’s 20th participation and marked Alonso’s first Le Mans win as part of his pursuit of motorsport’s Triple Crown.

A common mix-up is the GR010 Hybrid, which belongs to Toyota’s later Hypercar era and won after the regulations changed. The TS010 was an earlier Toyota Group prototype, while the GT-One was Toyota’s dramatic late-1990s contender.
