Matra was the French manufacturer that won three consecutive Le Mans races from 1972 to 1974 with the MS670 family.
Matra’s breakthrough came in 1972, when Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill won in an MS670. The victory was especially significant because it gave Matra its first overall Le Mans triumph and made Hill the first driver to complete motorsport’s informal Triple Crown of Monaco, the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans.
Matra retained the title in 1973 with Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse, driving the evolved MS670B. Pescarolo and Larrousse won again in 1974. Strictly speaking, the 1974 entry was associated with the MS680, while MS670C machinery also appeared during the season; quiz references often group these closely related prototypes under the MS670 name.
The cars used naturally aspirated three-litre V12 engines and became famous for their high-pitched sound. Matra also won the World Championship for Makes in 1973 and 1974 before withdrawing from sports-car racing after the 1974 season.
