Which tournament was the first co-hosted FIFA World Cup?
Answer
2002 FIFA World Cup
Answer
2002 FIFA World Cup
The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the first tournament co-hosted by two countries.
South Korea and Japan jointly staged the competition from 31 May to 30 June 2002. It was also the first FIFA World Cup held in Asia and the first played outside Europe or the Americas. The tournament used venues in both host nations, with the opening match in Seoul and the final in Yokohama.
Brazil won the competition, defeating Germany 2–0 in the final. Ronaldo scored both goals, finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with eight. South Korea made history by becoming the first Asian team to reach the semifinals, although its run was controversial because of disputed refereeing decisions in matches against Italy and Spain.
The 2002 event is sometimes described simply as the Korea-Japan World Cup. Later World Cups expanded the co-hosting model: the 2026 tournament is scheduled across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
