Which Tolstoy novel features the character Dmitri Nekhlyudov?
Answer
Resurrection
Answer
Resurrection
Dmitri Nekhlyudov is the central character of Leo Tolstoy’s novel Resurrection.
Published in 1899, Resurrection follows Nekhlyudov, an aristocrat who recognizes that his earlier actions helped ruin the life of Katyusha Maslova. When he encounters her years later as a defendant in a criminal case, guilt leads him toward moral change and an attempt to repair the harm he caused.
The novel is Tolstoy’s final major work of fiction. Its story expands into a broad critique of courts, prisons, military institutions, private property, and the Russian Orthodox establishment. Tolstoy combines a personal moral awakening with social and religious arguments.
Nekhlyudov is sometimes confused with Konstantin Levin from Anna Karenina, another wealthy Russian landowner involved in spiritual questioning. They are separate characters in separate novels, although both reflect Tolstoy’s interest in conscience and ethical responsibility.
