Which Tolkien work features the character Niggle, a painter distracted by practical duties?

The story behind the answer

Leaf by Niggle features Niggle, a painter distracted by practical duties.

J.R.R. Tolkien published the allegorical short story in 1945 in the Dublin Review. Niggle is an artist who wants to complete a vast painting of a tree, but errands, illness, and obligations repeatedly interrupt his work. The story explores creativity, duty, generosity, mortality, and the relationship between an imagined work and the world beyond it.

The tale is often discussed as one of Tolkien’s more personal works because Niggle’s unfinished painting can be read alongside Tolkien’s own long engagement with an enormous mythology. However, Tolkien resisted reducing his fiction to simple one-to-one autobiography.

Leaf by Niggle is not part of the main narrative of Middle-earth. It belongs to Tolkien’s shorter fiction and is notably more overtly allegorical than The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.
