Which Tolkien son edited and published many of his father’s posthumous Middle-earth works?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien edited and published many of his father J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumous Middle-earth works. He became the chief literary executor of Tolkien’s estate after Tolkien’s death in 1973.

His editorial work produced The Silmarillion in 1977, using drafts and notes left by his father. Christopher later published extensive studies and compilations, including Unfinished Tales, the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, and The Children of Húrin.

These books were not all finished novels in the same form as The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Christopher compared variants, arranged incomplete material, and supplied editorial framing. That distinction matters when describing the posthumous texts as Tolkien’s writings rather than straightforwardly completed manuscripts.
