Which Tolkien short story follows an artist whose garden becomes part of a larger natural world?

The story behind the answer

Leaf by Niggle is the Tolkien short story about an artist whose garden becomes part of a larger natural world.

The story follows Niggle, a painter who spends much of his life working on a vast picture of a tree and the landscape around it. He is repeatedly distracted by practical obligations and by the needs of his neighbor, Parish. Niggle worries that he will never finish the painting before death.

After a symbolic journey through illness, death, and a form of purgatorial healing, Niggle discovers a real landscape that resembles the most successful parts of his painting. Parish helps him cultivate the garden, and the two men find that their earlier difficulties have been transformed into friendship and mutual usefulness.

The story was first published in the Dublin Review in 1945 and later collected in Tree and Leaf. Readers often interpret it as a meditation on artistic creation, duty, mortality, and Tolkien’s own experience as a writer. It is not part of the Middle-earth narrative.
