Quenya is Tolkien’s High-elven tongue. In the mythology, it was associated especially with the Noldor and Vanyar, and it drew on the older speech of the Elves who lived in Valinor.
Tolkien developed Quenya as a constructed language with its own sounds, grammar, vocabulary, and historical changes. Finnish was an important inspiration for its aesthetic and structure, though Quenya is not simply Finnish with altered words.
Sindarin, another major Elvish language, became more widely spoken among many Elves in Middle-earth. This distinction can cause confusion: Quenya has high prestige and an ancient, formal role, while Sindarin is often the everyday Elvish language encountered in The Lord of the Rings.
