Which Tolkien language is spoken by Galadriel and other high elves in The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the Tolkien language associated with Galadriel and the high elves in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien modeled much of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also giving it an extensive fictional history.

Within Tolkien’s legendarium, Quenya was an ancient, prestigious Elvish language connected especially with the Noldor and the Eldar. It remained important in formal names, poetry, and ceremonial speech even when other Elves commonly used Sindarin in daily life.

Readers sometimes confuse Quenya with Sindarin because both are Elvish languages created by Tolkien and both appear in names and songs. Sindarin became the everyday Elvish language of many Elves in Middle-earth, whereas Quenya had a more elevated and historical role.

Tolkien was a professional philologist, and his languages were designed with connected vocabularies, sound changes, and fictional histories. Quenya therefore functions as more than a collection of invented words: it belongs to a carefully developed linguistic family.
