Christopher Tolkien edited and published The Silmarillion after J.R.R. Tolkien’s death.

The Silmarillion was published in 1977, four years after Tolkien died. Christopher Tolkien assembled and edited material that his father had developed across many decades, including stories of the creation of the world, the Valar, the First Age, and the history of the Elves.

Unlike The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the book was not completed and prepared for publication by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Christopher had to compare different drafts, resolve contradictions where possible, and arrange the material into a coherent posthumous volume.

Christopher Tolkien continued this editorial work in later books, including Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion therefore reflects both J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology and Christopher’s editorial decisions.
