Tengwar is the Tolkien-created script used to write many Elvish languages.
Tolkien designed the Tengwar, also called the Fëanorian characters, as a writing system for the languages of Middle-earth. Unlike an alphabet tied to only one language, Tengwar could represent several languages, including Quenya and Sindarin. Its letters are arranged around sounds and phonetic features, giving the script a structure different from ordinary English alphabets.
Tengwar is often confused with Cirth. Cirth is another writing system in Tolkien’s legendarium, consisting of angular runes that were especially associated with the Dwarves, although other peoples used them too. Sarati was an earlier script Tolkien devised within the fictional history of his languages.
The elegant appearance of Tengwar has made it one of the most recognizable visual elements associated with Middle-earth. It appears in Tolkien’s illustrations and in adaptations, although the exact lettering and language represented must be checked separately because the same script can encode different languages.
