Quenya is the Tolkien-created language spoken by many High Elves in Middle-earth.
Tolkien developed Quenya as an Elvish language with a detailed sound system, grammar, vocabulary, and history. He modeled aspects of its structure and sound on languages including Finnish, while also creating its vocabulary and internal evolution within his fictional world.
Quenya is associated particularly with the Eldar who traveled to Valinor. In the later history of Middle-earth, it functions more like a formal, literary, or ceremonial language than an everyday tongue for most Elves. Sindarin is generally the more widely spoken Elvish language in much of the Third Age.
The language appears in names, poetry, songs, and formal speech. Tolkien did not invent just one Elvish language: he created several related tongues, including Sindarin, Telerin, and the primitive language from which they developed.
