Quenya is the Tolkien-created Elvish language inspired partly by Finnish.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major languages of his legendarium. Its sound and structure were influenced especially by Finnish, while other influences included Latin and Greek. In the fictional history of Middle-earth, Quenya was associated with the High Elves and was treated as an ancient, prestigious language.
Quenya is not the same as Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin became more widely spoken among Elves in Middle-earth and drew heavily on Welsh phonology. Tolkien’s language invention began long before the books were published, and the stories, names, sound patterns, and historical relationships of the languages developed together rather than being added as a simple afterthought.
