Gandalf says “You shall not pass!” in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
The line occurs during the company’s escape through the Mines of Moria. On the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf confronts a Balrog, a powerful being associated with fire and shadow. He blocks the creature’s path and prevents it from crossing the bridge, allowing the rest of the company to flee.
In Tolkien’s book, Gandalf falls with the Balrog after the bridge breaks. He later returns as Gandalf the White, having completed a transformation that reflects his greater authority and renewed purpose. The famous wording is often remembered through film quotations, but the scene is also present in the novel.
Saruman is another wizard in the story, but he becomes an enemy and does not speak this line. Aragorn and Elrond are important leaders, yet neither is the speaker of this memorable command.
