Bilbo Baggins reaches the age of 111 at the start of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday with a large party in Hobbiton. The event opens the narrative of The Fellowship of the Ring and repeats the birthday setting introduced at the beginning of The Hobbit. Bilbo’s unusual longevity is a feature of Hobbit life, though his age is still remarkable even among Hobbits.
During the party, Bilbo gives a speech, disappears using the One Ring, and leaves the Shire. He passes the Ring to his younger cousin and heir, Frodo, who later becomes responsible for taking it away from the Shire.
The number is sometimes confused with Frodo’s age. Frodo is 33 at the time of Bilbo’s birthday party, the age at which Hobbits traditionally come of age. Bilbo’s 111th birthday is therefore both a personal milestone and the narrative starting point for the larger conflict.
