Eärendil is the father of Elrond and Elros in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Eärendil is the son of Tuor, a Man, and Idril Celebrindal, an Elf of Gondolin. He marries Elwing, whose ancestry combines the lines of Beren and Lúthien. Their sons, Elrond and Elros, therefore descend from both Elves and Men.
After reaching the Undying Lands, Eärendil asks the Valar for help against Morgoth. He later sails the heavens in the ship Vingilot while carrying a Silmaril, becoming the star associated with hope and guidance in Tolkien’s mythology.
Elrond chooses the fate of the Elves and becomes the lord of Rivendell. Elros chooses the fate of Men and becomes the first king of Númenor. Their different choices begin two important lines of descent in Tolkien’s later histories.
