Treebeard is known as the oldest Ent in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. He is called Fangorn in Sindarin and lives in Fangorn Forest during The Lord of the Rings.
Treebeard meets Merry and Pippin after the hobbits escape from the Orcs who captured them. At first he is cautious and takes a long time to consider the political crisis affecting the Ents. The hobbits’ account of Saruman’s destruction of trees helps persuade him that the wizard’s actions require a response.
Treebeard calls an Entmoot, a formal gathering of Ents. The Ents eventually march against Isengard, where they break the power of Saruman and flood the fortress. Their attack is one of the major turning points in the story’s conflict between industrial destruction and the living natural world.
Fangorn can cause confusion because it is both Treebeard’s Sindarin name and the name of the forest where he lives. Quickbeam is another named Ent, but he is not identified as the oldest.
