Which Tolkien character is known as the Lord of the Eagles?

The story behind the answer

Gwaihir is the Tolkien character known as the Lord of the Eagles.

Gwaihir the Windlord is the greatest of the Eagles of the Misty Mountains in The Lord of the Rings. He rescues Gandalf after the wizard’s battle with the Balrog and later carries Gandalf from Orthanc after Saruman’s treachery is exposed.

Gwaihir is sometimes confused with Thorondor, the greatest Eagle of the First Age, or with Landroval, another major Eagle of the Third Age. Tolkien’s Eagle characters belong to different historical periods, and their names are not interchangeable. Gwaihir also helps transport survivors after the Battle of the Black Gate.
