Which Tolkien character is known as the Grey Pilgrim?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf is the Tolkien character known as the Grey Pilgrim. In The Hobbit and much of The Lord of the Rings, he is identified by his grey clothing, pointed hat, staff, and wandering role across Middle-earth.

Gandalf is one of the Istari, emissaries sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron and encourage its peoples to resist evil. He arrives in the guise of an old man and is called Mithrandir by the Elves. After confronting the Balrog beneath Moria, he returns transformed as Gandalf the White.

The title “Grey Pilgrim” emphasizes Gandalf’s travel, humility, and indirect guidance. He does not rule the Free Peoples or simply defeat every enemy himself; instead, he helps individuals make crucial choices. Saruman is another Istar and is associated with white robes, while Radagast is associated with nature, so those names are common alternatives but do not match the title.
