Quenya is the invented language that J.R.R. Tolkien based mainly on Finnish.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the languages of the Elves. Its sound and grammar were strongly influenced by Finnish, a language he admired, while its vocabulary and history were created as part of his own linguistic mythology. Quenya is associated especially with the High Elves and is often described within the legendarium as a prestigious or ceremonial language.
Quenya is not the same as Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Tolkien based elements of Sindarin primarily on Welsh, while Quenya drew heavily on Finnish and also reflected influences from Latin and Greek. The language is known through words, names, poems, and phrases scattered across Tolkien’s writings. Its detailed construction illustrates that Tolkien was a professional philologist as well as a novelist.
