What is the name of the evil Vala who serves as the main antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion?

The story behind the answer

Morgoth is the evil Vala who serves as the main antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion.

Morgoth was originally called Melkor and was the most powerful of the Ainur who entered the world. He rebelled against the order established by Eru Ilúvatar and sought to dominate Arda, the world of Tolkien’s mythology.

His actions drive much of the First Age history, including the wars over the Silmarils and the destruction of kingdoms such as Gondolin and Nargothrond. The name Morgoth, meaning Dark Enemy in Sindarin, was given to him after he stole the Silmarils.

Sauron was originally one of Morgoth’s servants, not the primary villain of The Silmarillion. Saruman belongs mainly to the later Third Age narrative, while Ungoliant is a separate primordial being allied with Morgoth for a time.
