Aragorn carries Andúril after the sword is reforged in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Andúril is made from the shards of Narsil, the sword wielded by Elendil. Narsil was broken during the battle in which Elendil and the Dark Lord Sauron fought, and Isildur used a shard of the blade to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand.
The sword is reforged for Aragorn before the Fellowship leaves Rivendell. Its name means “Flame of the West” in Tolkien’s invented language Quenya. The reforged weapon symbolizes Aragorn’s heritage as an heir of Isildur and his growing acceptance of his role as king.
Andúril is sometimes confused with Glamdring, Gandalf’s sword, or Sting, Bilbo and Frodo’s short blade. Those are separate weapons with different histories and bearers.
