Which daughter of J.R.R. Tolkien served as a literary trustee of his estate?
Answer
Priscilla Tolkien
Answer
Priscilla Tolkien
Priscilla Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien’s only daughter, served as a literary trustee of his estate.
Priscilla Mary Anne Reuel Tolkien was born in 1929, the youngest of Tolkien’s four children. She studied English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and worked in social services in Oxford. She remained closely involved with her father’s literary legacy after his death in 1973.
Priscilla helped establish and support the Tolkien charitable trust and was involved in preserving aspects of the family’s papers and public memory. Her brothers were John, Michael, and Christopher Tolkien. Christopher became the principal editor of many posthumously published works, including The Silmarillion.
Priscilla is sometimes confused with Edith Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien’s wife, or with Mabel Tolkien, his mother. Those women were also important influences on his life, but Priscilla was his daughter and the family member named in this question. She died in 2022 at the age of 93.
