Hobbiton is the hobbit village where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction.
Hobbiton lies in the Shire, a settled region of the northwestern part of Middle-earth. Bilbo Baggins lives at Bag End, a comfortable smial on the Hill above the village, and Frodo later inherits the home. The village appears in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Important events connected with Hobbiton include Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday party and Frodo’s departure with the One Ring. After the War of the Ring, the village and the wider Shire suffer damage under the rule imposed by Saruman’s agents, before being restored by the returning hobbits.
Hobbiton is sometimes confused with the Shire itself. The Shire is the larger country inhabited by hobbits, while Hobbiton is one specific settlement within it. Bree is another nearby settlement, but it is not a hobbit village and lies outside the Shire.
