Which Tolkien character bears the Ring to Mount Doom?

Frodo Baggins bears the One Ring to Mount Doom.

In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo accepts the task of carrying the Ring from the Shire toward Mordor so it can be destroyed in the fire where it was made. The journey begins after Bilbo leaves the Ring to him and Gandalf discovers its identity. Frodo is accompanied for much of the quest by Samwise Gamgee, whose loyalty becomes essential to the mission.

Frodo is the Ring-bearer, but he is not the character who ultimately throws it into the fire. At the Cracks of Doom, the Ring’s power overwhelms him and he claims it. Gollum then bites off Frodo’s finger and falls into the chasm while holding the Ring, destroying it accidentally.

This distinction causes a frequent mix-up between Frodo and Sam. Sam briefly carries the Ring after Shelob attacks Frodo, but Frodo remains the central bearer responsible for bringing it to Mount Doom.
