Which Tolkien character bears the Elvish name Elessar?

The story behind the answer

Aragorn bears the Elvish name Elessar in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. The name means “Elfstone” and becomes especially important when Aragorn is recognized as the rightful king and receives the green jewel associated with that title.

Aragorn is introduced in The Fellowship of the Ring under the name Strider. He is a Ranger of the North who protects the Shire’s wider region and joins the hobbits after meeting them in Bree. His identity as Aragorn, son of Arathorn, connects him to the royal line of Isildur.

The title Elessar is not simply another casual nickname. It expresses Aragorn’s relationship with the Elves and his future role in the restored kingdoms. In the appendices, Aragorn becomes King Elessar after the War of the Ring and marries Arwen, daughter of Elrond.

Isildur is an ancestor rather than the character who bears this title. Faramir and Boromir are members of Gondor’s ruling family, but neither is the heir who becomes King Elessar. These overlapping royal and Elvish names are a frequent source of confusion for new readers.
