Which Tolkien book was published posthumously in 1980 from his writings about Middle-earth’s First Age?

The story behind the answer

Unfinished Tales was published posthumously in 1980 from J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings about Middle-earth’s First Age and later eras.

Christopher Tolkien edited the collection after his father’s death. The book gathers narratives and fragments that expand material connected with The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, Númenor, and the history of the Third Age. It includes accounts such as the story of Tuor’s arrival in Gondolin and additional information about the Istari and the Rohirrim.

The title is important: these texts are not all complete stories prepared by Tolkien for publication. Christopher often supplied editorial notes and explanations to show where versions differ or where the material breaks off. The Children of Húrin, published in 2007, is a later edited presentation of one particular First Age narrative, not the 1980 collection.
