The Tolkien book presenting the creation of Arda and the earlier history of Middle-earth is The Silmarillion.
The Silmarillion was edited and published posthumously by Tolkien’s son Christopher in 1977. It begins with the Ainulindalë, a creation account, and continues through the shaping of the world, the history of the Valar, and the wars against Morgoth.
Its central section, the Quenta Silmarillion, tells of the Silmarils and the tragic struggles of the Elves in the First Age. Later sections cover the Second Age and the Third Age, including material related to Númenor and the Rings of Power.
The book is not a conventional single-volume novel like The Hobbit. It is a collection of related mythic histories, legends, and narrative traditions assembled from Tolkien’s extensive posthumous papers.
