Which Titanic sister ship sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916?
Answer
HMHS Britannic
Answer
HMHS Britannic
HMHS Britannic was the Titanic sister ship that sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916.
Britannic was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line. She was the third and largest member of the Olympic class, following Olympic and Titanic. The Titanic disaster led to substantial safety changes during Britannic’s construction, including additional lifeboats and modified watertight arrangements.
Britannic entered service during the First World War as a hospital ship rather than a commercial ocean liner. On 21 November 1916, she struck a mine near the Greek island of Kea and sank in the Kea Channel.
Unlike Titanic, Britannic sank in wartime service and was carrying wounded soldiers and medical personnel. She went down much faster than Titanic, but most people aboard survived. The wreck remains one of the largest intact shipwrecks accessible to technical divers.
