Which Tirthankara attained nirvana at Mount Kailash?

The story behind the answer

Which Tirthankara attained nirvana at Mount Kailash? Rishabhanatha, Jainism’s first Tirthankara, is traditionally said to have attained nirvana there.

Jain tradition calls the sacred site Ashtapada, a mountain identified with or associated with Mount Kailash. Rishabhanatha’s liberation is described as moksha: the destruction of karmic bonds and release from the cycle of rebirth into the realm of liberated souls.

Rishabhanatha is also known as Adinatha and is regarded as the founder of the current Jain succession of 24 Tirthankaras. Jain accounts say he preached widely before travelling to Ashtapada, where he fasted, meditated, and attained final liberation.

A common mix-up is confusing the Tirthankaras’ different liberation sites. Parshvanatha attained moksha at Sammed Shikhar, Neminatha at Mount Girnar, and Mahavira at Pawapuri. Mount Kailash is the distinctive traditional destination associated with Rishabhanatha’s nirvana.
