What object is the symbol of the 15th Tirthankara Dharmanatha?

The story behind the answer

The object symbol of the 15th Tirthankara Dharmanatha is the vajra.

Dharmanatha is the fifteenth Tirthankara of the current Jain time cycle. In Jain iconography, his identifying emblem is the vajra, a ritual object often translated as a thunderbolt or diamond-like weapon. The term conveys both irresistible force and indestructibility, making it a distinctive emblem rather than a general symbol shared by every Tirthankara.

Jain tradition says Dharmanatha was born at Ratnapuri to King Bhanu and Queen Suvrata of the Ikshvaku dynasty. He is described as having renounced worldly life, attained spiritual perfection, and ultimately become a siddha—a liberated soul no longer subject to rebirth. His traditional color is golden, and his liberation place is Sammed Shikhar.

The vajra can cause confusion because it is also prominent in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, where it may be linked to Indra’s thunderbolt or used as a ritual scepter. In a Jain Tirthankara identification list, however, the vajra points specifically to Dharmanatha.
