Which three sons of Noah are named in Genesis as fathers of the post-flood nations?

The story behind the answer

Genesis names Noah’s three sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis 5:32 introduces these three sons before the flood narrative, and Genesis 7:13 says Noah entered the ark with his wife, his sons, and their wives. After the flood, Genesis 9 continues to discuss Shem, Ham, and Japheth, while Genesis 10 presents a table of nations descended from them.

The three names are therefore central to the biblical account’s explanation of how human families repopulated the world after the flood. Their wives are included among the ark’s human passengers, but Genesis does not name those women in the narrative.

This trio should not be confused with later patriarchal groupings such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Nor does the passage describe the sons as triplets or give their exact birth order in a simple modern sense. The names themselves are the stable answer supplied by Genesis.
