Chiang Mai hosts the annual Songkran parade traditionally featuring the Buddha image called Phra Phuttha Sihing.
During Chiang Mai’s Songkran observances, an important Buddha image is associated with public ceremonial activity and respectful water rituals. The image is commonly identified as Phra Phuttha Sihing, and its procession is part of the city’s religious and cultural celebrations.
The custom illustrates the difference between blessing water and recreational water play. People may gently sprinkle or pour water over sacred images as an act of respect, while nearby streets can host much more exuberant celebrations.
Bangkok also has major Songkran events, but the Phra Phuttha Sihing association is particularly connected with Chiang Mai’s traditional festival program.
