The tequila expression commonly called silver tequila is blanco.
Blanco tequila is also known as silver or plata tequila. It is generally bottled soon after distillation and is usually clear, although a short period in storage or certain production practices can affect its appearance. Blanco is the expression most often used in mixed drinks such as Margaritas and Ranch Water.
Unlike reposado and añejo tequila, blanco does not receive its defining character from extended oak aging. Its flavor profile commonly emphasizes cooked agave, pepper, herbs, citrus, and mineral notes, depending on the producer and the production area.
Silver does not mean that the tequila contains silver or that it has a particular alcohol strength. It is a descriptive market term for the clear appearance. Some clear tequilas are aged and then filtered, so color alone cannot always identify the production category; the label’s legal category is more reliable.
