Which tennis club hosted the Australian Open from 1972 through 1987?

The story behind the answer

Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club hosted the Australian Open from 1972 through 1987.

The tournament settled permanently in Melbourne in 1972 after years of moving between Australian and New Zealand cities. Kooyong, in Melbourne’s Toorak area, became the event’s regular home and staged its final Australian Open in January 1987.

Kooyong’s centre court was a grass venue, matching the tournament’s surface before the move. However, the stadium’s capacity and facilities were increasingly inadequate for a growing international championship. The tournament therefore moved to the purpose-built Flinders Park complex in 1988.

A common mix-up is confusing Kooyong Stadium with the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. The stadium is the principal court at the club, so both names identify the same Australian Open venue in this historical context. Kooyong later continued hosting tennis, including the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament.
