Which telecommunications business was founded by Dragon’s Den investor John Caudwell?

The story behind the answer

Dragon’s Den investor John Caudwell founded the telecommunications business Phones 4u.

Phones 4u was a major British mobile-phone retailer. Caudwell built the business during the rapid expansion of mobile communications, when consumers increasingly bought handsets and network contracts through specialist high-street retailers.

Caudwell appeared as an investor on the early British Dragon’s Den panel. His background in telecommunications meant he could assess pitches involving retail, technology, distribution and consumer services from direct commercial experience.

Phones 4u is often confused with Carphone Warehouse because both became prominent British mobile-phone retailers. They were separate companies with different founders. Phones 4u later disappeared from the high street after its network agreements were withdrawn in 2014, but its connection with Caudwell remains a significant part of the entrepreneur’s career.
