Apple is the technology company that introduced the Macintosh computer in 1984 and became one of the first firms valued at more than $1 trillion.
Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in 1976. The Macintosh, launched in January 1984, helped popularize graphical user interfaces and mouse-driven personal computing for consumers.
The company later expanded from computers into music players, smartphones, tablets, services, and wearable devices. The iPhone, introduced in 2007, became Apple’s central growth product and helped transform the company’s scale and market value. Apple reached a market capitalization above $1 trillion in 2018.
A company’s market capitalization is calculated by multiplying its share price by its shares outstanding. It is therefore different from revenue, profit, or the value of all assets. Apple’s position in rankings can change as its share price and the values of other large companies move.
