Which team won the Stanley Cup in the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season?

The story behind the answer

The New Jersey Devils won the Stanley Cup in the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season.

The NHL regular season was reduced to 48 games after a labor lockout delayed its start until January 1995. Despite the abbreviated schedule, the Devils navigated a demanding playoff field and reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in franchise history. They faced the Detroit Red Wings, who had won the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s top regular-season team.

New Jersey defeated Detroit in a four-game sweep, winning the Final 4–0. The Devils won the first two games in Detroit, then finished the series at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Their 5–2 victory in Game 4 secured the franchise’s first championship, in its 21st season.

Goaltender Martin Brodeur was central to the victory, allowing only seven goals in the Final. Forward Claude Lemieux scored 13 playoff goals and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The Devils’ disciplined defensive system, often associated with coach Jacques Lemaire and the neutral-zone trap, frustrated Detroit’s high-powered offense. The championship began a major era for New Jersey, which won two more Stanley Cups in 2000 and 2003.
