Which team finished as runners-up at the 1950 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Brazil finished as runners-up at the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament used a final round-robin group instead of a single championship final. Brazil entered the decisive match against Uruguay at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro needing only a draw to win the title.

Brazil took the lead through Friaça, but Uruguay recovered with goals from Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia. Uruguay won 2–1 and finished first in the final group, while Brazil finished second.

The match is often called the Maracanazo, meaning the Maracanã blow or shock. Because there was no formally designated final, some accounts describe Uruguay’s victory as the decisive match rather than a conventional final. Brazil’s runner-up finish remains one of the most famous disappointments in World Cup history.
