Which Taiwanese company manufactures chips for many of the world’s largest technology companies?

The story behind the answer

TSMC is the Taiwanese company that manufactures chips for many of the world’s largest technology companies.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, is the world’s leading dedicated semiconductor foundry. A foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies, allowing customers to outsource production while concentrating on chip architecture and software.

Morris Chang founded TSMC in 1987 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The company helped popularize the pure-play foundry model, in which the manufacturer does not design competing branded chips for the same customers. TSMC produces advanced processors used in smartphones, computers, data centers, and artificial-intelligence systems.

TSMC’s stock is listed in Taiwan under 2330 and in the United States through an American depositary receipt with the ticker TSM. Its strategic role in advanced chips has helped make it one of Asia’s most valuable companies.
