Which Taiwan-based semiconductor foundry manufactures advanced chips for Nvidia, Apple, and AMD?

The story behind the answer

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, manufactures advanced chips for Nvidia, Apple, and AMD.

TSMC was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It pioneered the dedicated foundry model: TSMC manufactures chips designed by other companies, rather than primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand.

That separation lets customers concentrate on processor design while TSMC invests in fabrication plants and production technology. Its customers include major companies in smartphones, personal computing, data centers, and artificial intelligence.

TSMC’s strategic importance and strong demand for leading-edge manufacturing have supported a very large market capitalization. It is not the same company as Nvidia or AMD: those firms design processors, while TSMC is the manufacturing partner for many of them.
