Which Taiwan-based company manufactures chips designed by Nvidia, Apple, and AMD?

The story behind the answer

TSMC manufactures chips designed by Nvidia, Apple, and AMD.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, usually abbreviated TSMC, is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor foundry. A foundry manufactures integrated circuits designed by other companies, allowing clients to focus on architecture, software, and product development without owning equivalent fabrication capacity.

TSMC was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its business model helped separate chip design from chip manufacturing and became central to the modern semiconductor industry. The company produces advanced processors as well as chips using older, highly reliable manufacturing processes.

People sometimes confuse TSMC with a chip-brand company that sells finished consumer devices. TSMC generally manufactures components for customers rather than marketing smartphones or graphics cards under its own consumer brand. Its strategic importance and enormous capital spending have helped make it one of the world’s most valuable listed companies by market capitalization.
