Narsil is the sword reforged as Andúril in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Narsil was the blade wielded by Elendil, the founder of the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth.
During the final battle of the Second Age, Narsil broke when Elendil fell fighting Sauron. Isildur then used the broken sword’s hilt-shard to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. The shards were preserved by Isildur’s heirs and became a symbol of the lost kingship.
In The Lord of the Rings, the sword is reforged by the Elves of Rivendell for Aragorn. Aragorn receives the new weapon before leaving on the Fellowship’s journey. Its name, Andúril, means “Flame of the West” in the language of Tolkien’s Elves.
Narsil and Andúril are therefore two names for different stages of the same royal sword. Glamdring belonged to Gandalf, while Sting was Bilbo’s and later Frodo’s small blade.
